Chapter 14

“Hershey Bar, what is going on?” Jenna asked, trying to cut the tension as Herschel pulled her out of the bar into the cool night air. Trying not to fall—these thigh high heeled boots were no joke—she tried to get her footing under control while trying to understand what sparked this behavior. Once they were a block away, he stopped, unable to make eye contact. He let out a loud breath of air before covering his eyes with his arm.

“Herschel…” Jenna dragged out his name, trying to pull him back from whatever place his brain had gone.

He shook his head, unable to look at her. He reminded her of a small child that was embarrassed and just wanted to hide.

“Hershey Bar?” She prodded, gently using his new nickname and moving toward him to take his free hand. She hoped the gesture would remind him she was on his side. Was there for him.

“She…UGH! I’m such a loser.” He shuddered with embarrassment at the memory. He pulled his arm away from his eyes, still unable to make eye contact with Jenna.

“Just tell me, what happened”

“Amanda asked me about you. And then asked…” he blinked away some tears, anger and frustration built up. “Why—why a girl like you could be with a guy like me?” He jammed his thumb into his chest. “Me. Like… as if I was trash and didn’t deserve you.”

Jenna felt sick. And it wasn’t the one alcoholic drink she had two hours ago. To be fair, she wouldn’t have probably gone out with a guy like Herschel. But then again, she wouldn’t have gone out with any guy. She was too focused on her schooling.

But now that she was getting to know Herschel… why wouldn’t anyone not want to go out with him? He was fun, caring, and always able to make anyone who was around him feel comfortable in their own skin.

“I just…FUCK!” He cried, bending over for a moment trying to catch his breath. The frustration was so strong he didn’t seem sure whether he wanted to curl down and sob or punch someone.

“Herschel.” She wasn’t sure what else to say, so she just kept saying his name.

He looked up at her, his copper eyes blazing life-fire in the dim light of the city. “I wasn’t even sure what to say to her because…it’s true. You’re only dating me as a ruse to get her.”

“But I would,” Jenna whispered, the sound of her voice making her pause. “I mean, if you had asked me. After getting to know you.” Jenna sighed, rubbing her forehead and trying to find the right words to explain what she meant. “Herschel, I really don’t think you need to change. You are one of the funniest, sweetest, most laid-back guys I know. And this world is so uptight all the time, who couldn’t use a little laid-backness? Someone who makes you happy.”

“Really?” He stood up, studying her and thinking over what she was saying.

She nodded. “Since I have gotten to get to know you, my life has been so much more fun.
